The hub has narrowly spaced ball bearing races. It's a crap shoot how long they last irrespective of the name on the box.

They should have tapered roller bearings in them.

True but it still doesn't explain why anyone I know that has Timkens or OEM are getting decent mileage while those that buy the cheap brands get less then half that mileage.
Rock Auto alone shows a price difference of $50 to $150 depending on brand..

Like I mentioned my Timkens have outlasted 2 sets of cheaper bearings on my buddies rig and he doesn't put near the miles on that I do. I could understand if one of mine went early or one of his lasted longer but my 2 to his 4 can't be a coincidence..
They wouldn't be the only manufacturer to offer different levels of quality for different price points.
