Default Alarm sounding

how come whenever I unlock my jeep with the spare key (fobloss or whatever) my alarm sounds? And is there any way to turn off the alarm without holding the unlock key on the fob? I haven't been able to use my spare because my jeep always flips out. I only have the two keys and Since the spare isn't working (or so it seems) and I would like to be able to use both.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

They spare might need to be reprogrammed to the jeep. Does the spare key work in the ignition? Or does it start up and cut out a few seconds later?

Two issues here.

One is the alarm question.
The alarmed is armed by locking the door with the power door lock inside the jeep or with the key-fob. There is a 16 second arming period, during which, unlocking a door or the gate will prevent the arming of the alarm.
The only way to do what you want would be to not set the alarm to begin with. If I remember, locking the door with the key will lock but not set the alarm.

The other issue is the transponder in the key, w/ or w/o the buttons. That has to be programmed to the jeep. If you have two transponder keys you can programm up to 8. It is a good idea to have a third key programmed tot the transponder so you aren't at the mercy of a dealer if you lose one of your original two. Said third key need not have the power option buttons but must be a transponder key. Available online for $10-15.

Do you know why your spare key isn't working? dead battery?

Sorry, all of my keys work, just one sets off the alarm, no dead batteries, it just has no buttons. I am not sure if it's programmed or not, I'll check when I am done with my work, if it isn't programmed how do I program it?

Thanks for the help.

You'll know if the transponder is programmed to the jeep if the key will start the jeep and it runs for more than a few seconds. Try it without one of the other keys near the ignition.

My guess is that you have a "third" key along with the two original keys. And that the third key doesn't have the electronics in it for power locks. Is that right?

If you set the alarm by locking the door with the remote or the lock switch in the jeep and the alarm actually activates (16-second delay period) then the only way to de-activate the alarm is with the remote or by getting the key into the ignition.

I think if you lock the door by turning the key in the lock cylinder you do not activate the alarm.

Aftermarket keys or additional OEM keys need to be programmed (its called SENTRY in the manuals). As long as you have two programmed keys, you can program additional keys yourself. Otherwise, you need to see a dealer or some sophisticated locksmith.

Your manual has the steps for programming keys. And probably info that is more understandable than my ramblings.

Note to everyone: Get a blank key off the internet for $15 and program it to your rig. I have seen posts where forum members have lost one of the two OEM keys and had to pay $200 for replacement. Search it.......
