Another question from a Jeep newbie - 3.8 or 3.6 and Sport JKU vs Sahara JKU?
I have a 11 with 3.73's D44 rear 3.8 engine. I average 19 city 22 hwy. I've driven the 12 sport and a 12 rubicon. Not a major diff in power to me. If at all. Fellow jeeper at who is salesman at the Dealarship agrees. The diff in my op is negligible. Some people have diff experiences. All that vein said, buy the newest vehicle you can afford, more warranty, more resale value. Good luck
Btw I'd go with the red 12 less miles. Don't like the chrome grill inserts tho, but sharp other wise, they just stand out a bit. Blk one has nice tires rims and bars but kinda high miles. I think I have 22 or 24k on my 11. Good luck! Post which one ya get!

Id go red....I like that color was my second choice when i got mine, and it already has some BFG ATs on it.....ready to go.....
I never drove a 3.8 JK so i can't compare power of the the 3.6 to the older 3.8, but my old Jeep was an 04 Rubi with a 5 speed, 35's and 5.13 gears.......My 2012 3.6 destroys the old 4.0 away especially DD on the road......good luck and congrats on whatever you choose

Ok seems like new 3.6 is the way to go. I have another question are the plain sport models stiff capable of going mildly off road? Our two choices in the 12 is a red color with power windows and locks or white without power features. Which is the more attractive color? I've not seen the cherry red in person.
The red seems to be the clear winner. Here's why:
Reason 1 - Power options are a luxury to some, but if this is your daily driver and family rig, it's nice to be able to just "unlock" the doors for everyone versus reach in the back, across the console, etc to lock and unlock doors, open windows, etc. The tailgate on a non-power optioned rig is locked and unlocked only with the key and not an inside latch. You get a few other goodies with that 24S group. Unless you're an absolute purist...I wouldn't buy a Jeep as a daily driver that didn't have these things.
Reason 2 - It's got a $1500 set of tires on it. Those BFG A/T's are some of the best all terrain tires on the market, they have a treadwear rating of 50k miles and they're substantially improved over the stock Wrangler tire. It looks like they're in decent shape and have plenty of life left (although it's tough to tell for sure from the pics). They are very capable off road. I can't tell by looking, but if it has the 3.73 gears, that's even better and it will feel a bit quicker on road.
2012 with the 3.6 and 3.73 gears if you can find it! I test drove an '11 3.8 Rubicon with 4.10's and compared it to a '12 3.6 with 3.73's and wow, night and day. Here in the hills of Pittsburgh you need torque, and with the new engine it's a no brainer to go with a 2012. In the long run it'll be cheaper if you find one with 3.73 gears, your trans won't always be hunting for gears especially when you add on those 33's and you won't need to regear. Keep searching, find what you really want, don't settle for less.
