Default Another tire clearance question.

Hello All,

My jeep will hardly every be off road and likely never see rocks. I want to use the stock 18 inch wheels without spacers. I spoke to a guy at discount tire the other day and he suggested the nitto terra grapplers in 285/65/18. Through some reading it looks like others had some rubbing in the front at steering lock. I noticed that Nitto also makes that tire in 275/70/18. Does anyone have experience with this size tire on their stock Sahara? I am considering the leveling kit. Will the slight lift give me the clearance I need for the bigger tires? For the time being, I don't plan on going larger than the above mentioned sizes for tires. I want a beefier look with a slightly more aggressive tire that I could trust for some mild offroading. If you guys have any pics to show that would be great. I looked for a while and didn't see that this had been specifically addressed before. Thanks in advance for any advice you can pass along.

Bobby

I've had a guy at my local 4 Wheel Parts Perfomance Center tell me I could go up to a 305/65 on my 2010 stock Sahara with no issues. Haven't done it yet but I figure these guys would know they deal with it everyday.

I have the Nitto terra grapplers 285/70/17, they do rub at full articulation. However, I have 2dr X model so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

The Leveling Kit will help you with the height of the tires fitting better under your Jeep, but with the 285 width tire, you will probably rub when at full turn. You'll either need to run some Spidertrax wheel spacers to keep that from happening, or else adjust your steering stops. (see write-up)

a 305/65R18, that's a 34" tire that's over 12" wide!!!! It will rub if mounted on stock rims on a stock Jeep, so I guess you figured wrong.

I figured the 305's would rub too. It looks like the 275/70/18 may be the biggest that will work on the stock wheels without spacers. I know there are a ton of people on this sight that run them, but I don't think I am comfortable with the extra risk given that the jeep spends most of it's time as a wife/kid transport. I would love to see a pic with a similar setup so I could get an idea of how much of a change it makes in the looks. It seems like an extra 20 mm of tire plus the those particular tires seem to have pretty "square shoulders" as compared to the stock duelers.
