I heard the electric cable that runs from the battery to the starter is causing the starting problems on jk's. Any truth to this?
My auto parts store connected a diagnostic machine to test my charging system and the result was a .5 amp draw at the starter. The possible causes of this are loose, worn connection/cable at the starter or dirty connections at the starter.
I purchased a can of spray cleaner for electric parts/wiring but I still get the 3-6 times no start then it starts deal.
Any input on this?
Well, my Jeep starts excellent, but if it didn't heres what i would do.
-Get a multi-meter and check voltage on battery to ground, should be somewhere between 11.5-12.5 Volts DC (VDC) when the engine is secured. If it's not, then you have a battery issue, alternator issue, or current draw issue. Check the ground cable for corrosion, as well as the positive leads. If it checks out, then continue.
-Get that multi-meter, read VDC from line in on the starting solenoid, again should be somewhere between 11.5-12.5 VDC. If it is less, then check for, and remove any corrosion between the solonoid and the battery, a good copper wire brush always helps. Make sure you check the contact point between the crimp terminals and the copper conductor of the cable.
-Use the resistance function of the multi-meter, measure resistance from the bolt post of the starter, and line-out post of the solonoid. Here, you are checking for continuity between the two. It should read less than 1. If it doesnt, basically do the same steps as before to clean the cable and termination points.
-Try to start the engine, if it doesn't start, have a buddy hold the key in the starting position, and VERY CARFULLY check voltage from the starter post to ground. Should read around 12VDC, if it does, then you have a starter issue, and it needs to be tested by your local auto parts depot. If you don't, then it is a solonoid problem and it needs to be replaced.

I'm in the middle of replacing the starter on my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara when I noticed something that seemed off to me. The battery cable to the starter solenoid has a tab coming off of it pointing down. Could this tab be touching something else on the starter that would cause the Jeep to turn over when the battery is reconnected? Can I cut that tab off? Tab on battery cable ring
The tab was there on mine and it helped position the wire for OEM replacement. I would leave it. Also I went with AC Delco Pro and it was perfect fit. The one bolt is a pain and the easiest way to get at it I found was adding a 10mm deep socket to a 6 inch extension which extended the handle of my 3/8 ratchet.
