Auto Tranny Reverse Failure
Some time ago I reported that my auto tranny (52K miles) would occassionally act like it was jumping out of gear in Drive. I thought that I had the problem pinned down to the transfer case not being firmly shoved into 2Hi after using 4Hi during the winter.
I have not had a problem in months and yester drove the Jeep quite a bit with no indication of problems.
This morning, I went to back out of the garage, and in reverse it grabbed enough to slightly roll backwards, but then went totally neutral with the engine just reving and nothing happening. I drove it in drive around the block, I tried 4Hi (although that caused my BLD to grab hold due to being on pavement) but nothing I would do worked on reverse. Drive seems totally normal.
Facts:
1) Tranny was serviced by a local tranny shop at 50K miles. Fluid it full and seems normal with no smell normally associated with burnt plates.
2) crawled underneath and checked linkage with my wife running it through the gears. All appear to be normal.
3) When I went to drive it back into the garage, I got one ding and a check engine light.
4) Error code check indicates ------------, then done. Tried it several times.
5) Tried to drive it again. On flat garage floor, I put in in reverse, engine speed changes slightly and a "cricket" like sound is heard. Vehicle moves very slightly backwards as long as I leave it in idle. If I add gas, it stops. The cricket sound is gone in neutral, Drive, or 2nd. Wonder if I lost reverse gear (and then, if I did, why). I did, however get another "ding" pointing to the CEL, but again, no codes came up.
Before I take it to the dealer, is there something I am missing. Very odd failure based on issues I have had with auto transmissions in the past. I did just put on my Rubicon tires/wheels yesterday, but other than that, have done nothing to the engine/drivetrain that should affect it.

You got a check engine light? What was the code?
1. To check your Jeep JK Wrangler’s DTC codes, simply insert your key into the ignition, turn it to the ‘ON’ position but do not start the engine. Then, push the key into the ignition cylinder and while holding it in, turn it to the ‘OFF’ position and then back to the ‘ON’ position (3) times straight making sure to end with it in the ‘ON’ position. It is important to keep pushing in on the key to prevent it from catching at the different positions along the way.
2. If you do step #1 correctly, all your dash lights will illuminate and your odometer will show up as a series of (6) dashes as shown in the pic to the left. If your Jeep JK Wrangler has any logged in any DTC’s, they will be displayed soon after the dashes appear. Write down the DTC(s) and check it/them against the list below to find out what they mean.
3. If your Jeep JK Wrangler has not logged in any DTC’s, the dashes on your odometer will be followed by the message ‘-done-’. Turn your key to the ‘OFF’ position and you will in fact be done.

Was just now reading the section on the codes (and procedures). When I went out and did the code routine, I got ------------ then done. No codes appear to come up. I didn't think that was possible if the CEL was on.
I read what you added to post 1. I know you said the fluid is full, but it sure sounds like low fluid. When I changed the fluid in my JK, it took several tries to get it to be truly up to the correct level.
Yes...light still on....
And I did check and recheck fluid "by the manual" technique.
I have the extended power train warranty so it visits the dealer in the morning (hope the drive function still works or I will be calling a wrecker).
Thanks
