Default Auto trans question

My reverse feels very "loose" - not quite sure how else to describe it. If I'm pointing downhill and put it in reverse to back up, when I take my foot off the brake it will roll forward and almost feels like it's in neutral until I give it a lot of gas - I have to get the rpm up to around 3k before it will stop rolling forward and start backing up the hill. I don't think it was always like this (maybe it was, but I never noticed it until recently).

Is this normal? Is there anything in the trans that can be adjusted for this?

Have you checked the oil level? Not trying to sound smart but that is what I would check first. IF not that, then take to dealer for repairs. Under warranty, right?

I hold the e-brake, then release it when it starts to move...

If Your pointing uphill in drive, does the Jeep roll backwards and take same amount of RPM'm to move ?

It does roll back a little in Drive, but it's much worse in Reverse. The rpm needed in Drive feels "normal", but in reverse it just doesn't feel right. It feels like I'm in neutral until it gets some engine speed.

I haven't looked at the jeep's reverse gear setup, but some transmissions use a gearing between the first and second gear's ratio - which means it takes more powere delivered to make it move backwards - this makes it "harder" for the torque converter to overcome the force of gravity pulling the vehicle downhill. The converter will therefore 'flash' to a higher speed before the engine can deliver the power through the transmission to the wheels. (anyone out there know the ratios of the trans??) SO - is this normal - probably, but I haven't personally driven your jeep so I can't say for sure....

Also - Labrador - why in the heck would you be pulling the e-brake on an auto - unless you don't have a left foot... simply use the left foot on the regular brake and the right on the skinny pedal and feather the gas "on" and the brake "off" to prevent rolling more downhill.

Well there 'ya go - reverse is about 1/2 way between 1st and 2nd's gear ratio... That makes it "harder" to overcome the force than being in 1st, but not quite as hard as 2nd...

x3 - I start Jeep in my level garage, put it in reverse and take my foot off brake. Jeep will not move till I give it some gas and increase rpm's. All oil levels are OK.
I just think it's a automatic transmission "Jeep thing".

I'll be checking this thread in case it's not normal and someone has a solution.
