Default Auto Trans shifting issue (Manuel Mode)

Not all the time but 70% of the time when I drive my 2012 JK 4 door automatic on a certain roads I use the manuel shifting. I have 120k miles on Jeep and my fluid has been changed twice, most recently about 3 months ago.

The manuel shifting does not always work. I push lever over to left or right and it will not shift. I am driving at acceptable speeds or slowing down going into corner. It has been doing this last 10k miles or so. It was fine till then.

Is there a solenoid that does the shifting? Is it mechanical? Or maybe a sensor? I am mostly a DIYer any help in right direction would be appreciated.

I can't answer your question, but I see you have the highest mileage I have seen on a 2012. I'm at 72,000. Could you let us know any other issues you've had? Just wondering what I can expect as I go over the 100k mark.

I started having the same issue a few months ago. It was to the point that it would only work 70% of the time. As of last weekend it does NOT works 98% of the time. When it does let me shift it gets stuck on 1st gear and it wont let me up shift, even holding it to the right hoping it resets to Drive. The only way of getting out of 1st is to put it in Neutral then shifting back to drive. It seems to get worse during hot days (hot being 89-94, San Diego weather). I was thinking about taking it apart and checking it out. Hopefully someone can chime in before it tear into the heap. Mileage is at 40k'ish and also a 2012 JKU.

just a clock spring that I still need to replace. Causes air bag to ding when you turn sharp. Otherwise nothing but normal fluid changes and brake job.

Yea that is what I do, put in neutral. Like you said works better on cooler days or first thing in morning. But stinks as everything warms up.

I got this from a friend that is a service manager at a dealership. I do not know why I did not think about calling him first. This is what he said,

Ok so that system is all electronic. It's going to have to go to a shop for diagnosis. What will need to happen is it will need to have a laptop with Chrysler diagnostic software and have someone manually shift it and watch the trans control module so see what it's seeing. It may be a shifter problem, internal valve body solenoid, or transmission control module problem. If I was a guessing man I'd guess it's the shifter. The electronics for it anyway and I'd guess you have to get the shifter to get them.

So I did it twice with it hooked up and it shifted perfect each time.

I thought I let you know the next thing that went out was catalytic converter on passenger side. Fairly easy fix about 2.5 hours and 1 broken exhaust bolt. And I am at 145K now.Click image for larger version
