Default Auto Trans/TFcase Refill...???

It's time (over due) to change the ATF in my auto trans and TF case. I'm asking those of you that have done this yourself, how many quarts to refill...???
Thanks...

I don't know the answer, but I would make this suggestion. I don't know if it has one, but I bet it does.....look and see if theres a torque converter drain plug. You will have to unbolt the lower half of the bell housing, but it's just a cover with like four or so bolts. If the converter has a drain plug, you'll get a lot more of the old fluid out.

Yes.....well I hadn't planned on draining the torque converter even if it does have a drain plug, which like you say some do, but a lot don't. I wonder if you took it to the dealer if they would do that? I know that the converter carries at least a couple quarts, but I didn't think that when you did a refill it was a major concern. I guess I can always call the dealer and see how they do it.
Thanks much....

Typically dealers are hooking up to the cooler lines with a pump and trying to cycle all the fluid in the system.

Typically charging like $150 or so from what I've seen

That wouldn't flush the fluid out of the torque converter too.....would it?

that should flush the fluid out of everything. These automatics don't have a drain plug in the torque converter. Theres not even a cover on the bottom of the housing that you can remove to get at the torque converter.

I don't like trans flush machines. I sorta agree with some of the old timers about flushing some of the friction material out of the transmission. I have seen an older ford Torino that got a trans flush and the trans quit pulling. Granted, it had about 150K on it, but it was operating fine before the flush. Coincidence? Maybe. All I would do would be to drain as much of the old fluid and refill it with a fresh filter. Dave, do you have an auxillary trans cooler? If not, you might wanna think about one. They are cheap insurance.

Lastly....isn't the capacity for the transmission listed in the owner's manual? I haven't looked, but I would hate to think it's not there.

I tried looking in the manual the other day. All I could find was what kind, but not how much. I'll look again tho.

No, I haven't got a cooler. Haven't really had the need yet as I don't wheel very often....so far. Plus it's always friggin cold up here and I doubt the tranny ever gets too hot. If I do start to off road a bit more then I will look into one for sure.
