Question automatic stutter when starting off

I've searched and searched and still haven’t found anything on this...

The problem is, after my jeep has been sitting for a while (over night, or during the day while in the office), when I start to drive, it will stutter and shake violently for a few seconds. It seems to do it when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Once it’s done its stutter, it won’t do it again till the jeep has been sitting long enough to cool off. My concern about this is that it’s getting progressively worse.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this and knew of a solution before I take it to the dealer. Or if anyone has an idea of what it could be so I won’t sound like a complete dunce when I do take it in.

i had a "stutter" which i though was a variety of things... though maybe the tires slipping on my steep driveway, tranmission, etc.

it only happened to my jeep a couple times and only when i was parked facing down a hill and backed up it. it would shutter until i began moving at least 2-3 MPH

good luck... i would take it to the dealership and exercise your warranty

Mine idles a little rough for a second or too on a cold start. Its a Jeep so figured it was normal. No trouble after that. I usually let it idle a several seconds before driving off.

I am not sure if we are talking about the same thing, but my 4 door hates driving at lower speeds (25-30mph or so). I guess I would call it a shudder, or hesitation before it automatically changes gears, or I accelerate. Not like the whole vehicle shakes or anything, but I can sort of feel a bit of a vibration it on the pedal and the floor.

This is my first Jeep (first non-sports car, for that matter), and I wasn't sure if this was normal.

I also noticed that you can really "feel" the bumps on crappy, potholed pavement, but I also thought that was also normal for a Jeep...?

atomicmecha...

do you mean that right after a cold start, when you first get into gear and start moving, you get a shake or shudder?

I get it... but I asked about that TSB and someone said it was reference the torque converter lockout at highway speeds....

Mine has abour 2300 miles on it now. It also sits for 5-6 days straight without being moved. I think it may have something to do with drainback of the fluid. My ZJ has no anti-drainback valve in it... and when I first fire it up the tranny pump has to catch up. Usually a blip of the throttle in neutral resolves it... but I forget to try it in the JK.

I get the same thing with mine. Only happens once in a while. When I first start it up and drive down the street and stop at the light. If I sit there in idle I get a little shudder like the engine wants to shut off but never does. The rpm's don't go down or anything. The tach stays in the same spot at about 600 rpm's. It goes away when I start driving. Thought I was getting the torque convertor shudder too but was not sure. That hasn't happened for a while. Took it to the dealer and they scanned the computer with the scantool and said nothing was wrong. Let me rephrase that. They could not duplicate the problem and nothing showed up on theor computer. So guess I have to wait until I keep having the problem and go back. Not sure if this is the torque convertor or not. They told me at the dealer that there are no TSB's for any of this stuff and even said it on my paperwok they gave me. Should have taken the prinout with me to the dealer of the TSB.

Default Can Evap Caniter Cause this???

Just wondering if anyone thinks a faulty evap canister can cause whats happening to some of us in this thread?

I read somewhere that if evap canister isn't working properly that it can cause a rough idle sort of like what is happening at start up. I don't have any lights on my dash for any problems so I was wondering if it may be a cause. My impression is that the evap canister has something to do with trapping gas until the engine become hot enough to burn it off ??????? If this only happens at start up due to the engine being cold maybe thats why it shudders till it warms up. Oh well my 2 cents..
