Default Broken Key

My lovely wife managed to "break my key to the Jeep so now I have yours"!!!!

I guess she slammed her key in the rear hatch (dont ask!).

Since I only have one key now, does that mean a trip to the dealership and about a $ 150.00 or so?

yes it does... mine charges $110 for the key (if the fob is built in) then they need to contact chrysler with your VIN and get the security Pin# for the SKREEM module. once they have that, and the new $110 key, they can program it to your JK for a cost of approx $60 using the StarScan

The best bet is to get yourself a third key before you break/ruin the second key.

I bought two blank key with the appropriate chips for about $30. then had them cut to match the jeep (free!) at the local hardware.

Then I did the procedure to code them to the vehicle.

Only problem is that they don't have the auto unlock or remote start on them.

do a search for the info on the blank key seller.

I'll poke around to see if I can find the posts.

Is there any chance of holding the broken key by the ignition to program the new key, I am not sure exactly how the transponder communication works but I have seen this mentioned in another thread.

The ebay site posted by BlackNorthern is as good as any. Its not the one I used but that looks just like the key blanks I got.

If you have two working keys you can program the others by yourself. The procedure is in the manual.

This is from the 08 manual (but if I remember correctly, I had a problem with the timing of one of the steps. eventually I got them programmed.) I'll try to dig up my old posts to find out the issue. I think I posted it.

Customer Key Programming
If you have two valid sentry keys, you can program new
sentry keys to the system by performing the following
procedure:
1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s) to
match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.
2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn
the ignition switch to the “ON” position for at least 3
seconds, but no longer than 15-seconds. Then, turn the
ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and remove the
first key.
3. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position within 15
seconds. After ten seconds, a chime will sound. In
addition, the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will
begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”
position and remove the second key.
4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch. Turn
the ignition switch to the “ON” position within 60
seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will sound. In
addition, the Vehicle Security Alarm Indicator Light will
stop flashing. To indicate that programming is complete,
the indicator light will turn on again for 3 seconds and
then turn off.
