Default Broken teeth in rear diff. How long can I drive like this?

Well I had a leak in my diff so I pulled the cover off to reseal it and I noticed 4 teeth chipped all on one spindle. How long can I drive like this? Also I'm supposed to have a factory trac loc but this thing looks like its just an open diff. What is It, open, truetrak or trac loc?

Not long.

I guess you could always take the rear driveshaft off and drive in 4-hi (so it'll be front wheel drive) for the time if you can't get it fixed now?

It's a relatively cheap repair now, you only need spider gears. If you keep driving it and they come apart you'll be looking at a complete rebuild, and that wont be cheap.

I'm hearing a squealing noise sometimes now. it's hard to pinpoint where it is coming from but its not the brakes because I tap them and nothing changes. Then all of a sudden for some strange reason the noise will disapear.

Seems like a lot of work to pull it all apart. I'm wondering if I should just get a true trac and put it in instead.

Any special tools needed to swap a trac loc with a trueTrac? Does the ring and pinion have to be reset again?

If you have no experience with rears pay someone to rebuild it. It's not something a novice should do because if you do it wrong it wont last long.

Replacing the carrier is easy. If you have ever done a brake job and know how to take apart and rebuild brakes then the axle hubs and shafts are really not much harder. In the ring and pinion job the pinion is the bitch, that is where all of the "science" is involved, not the ring gear, and sense you're not going to have to mess with the pinion at all this wouldn't be a problem. Honestly, all of the work will be in taking everything apart and putting it all back together. The install of the trutrac carrier to the ring gear and back into the diff housing I bet wouldn't take 20 minutes if you're competent with an impact wrench. The whole thing could be done in an afternoon with you and a buddy.

cheers,

Tyler.
