Default Camshaft Position Sensor Bolt Size

Hi all,

I just bought an ‘09 JK and on the first drive the CEL came on for the camshaft position sensor. I checked it out and turns out the bolt is missing.

I’ve been looking around but can’t seem to find the dimensions of the bolt. Does anyone know where I can find one?

It's not just a standard bolt. There's a fat shoulder on it with a seal. If the bolt is gone, I think you need a new sensor. They are $25-50 it looks like, depending what brand you go with. I haven't seen the right bolt for sale individually anywhere.

This is one of those situations where little gadgets like this are priceless to have on hand -

I don't see that bolt listed specifically on parts diagrams. you're gonna have to get lucky with someone pulling one out of their engine, generally judging size and grabbing a few options at the hardware store, or getting little tool like above which you'd be able to use again in the future.

thanks but I’m not sure the bolt comes with the sensor… I’d be happy to be wrong though!

Aaahh, I missed the '09' part of your OP. The 3.8 cam sensor sure looks like it has a separate bolt. On the 3.6 it's captive. I'd bet it's an M6x1.0, just based on the hardware I've run across. My second guess would be M5x0.8. I don't know how deep it threads in so I can't even venture a ballpark on length. I'm with resharp on picking out a few bolts at the hardware store and seeing what threads in and how deep.

Captive! What a novel idea

Sorry if i missed this, but did you have the 3.6 in there? If so, the Cam Position Sensor comes with a shouldered hex bolt with a sealing o-ring (see image below). Even if you found the proper thread pitch and shoulder size, you could be lacking a good seal without that o-ring.

The good news is I've purchased multiple brands when trouble shooting my CPS errors and all of them came with the bolt. They run $15-$30 depending on what manufacture you go with... or you can just yank one from a pull-a-part yard for next to nothing. Hope it helps!

It was the 3.8. The OP says it's an '09, I missed it the first time too.
