It was a 2000 Camaro SS and the show was shot in 2001 so I'm guessing the the car had 10-20,000 miles at most. I think the real story is they replaced synthetics with synthetics and still gained power. I think that's quite impressive. Knowing Brian, that Mobil 1 engine oil probably had less than 3,000 on it as well since he regularly raced it at Beech Bend. It was known to be one of the fastest stock SS's in the county at the time. It ran a 12.91 1/4 mile when it was about a month old.

They did a test on motor oils in a Sport Rider magazine a few years back & the one thing I remembered about the Royal Purple is that the Dye that they add to to oil to make it purple was actually causing it to turn black almost immediately & it was the first oil to "coke up" at the lowest temp.

They claimed that the purple color was a marketing gimmick & does nothing. It may have even contributed to its poor test result.

Im not into fu fu colored oil & that was enough to make stay away.

If you want the absolute best Oils & gear lubes & price is no object, Redline would be my choice, but for its reasonable price & availability I choose Mobil 1.

Apologies for the hi-jack, but anyone here running Redline in their JK's 6-speed?

I've heard second hand somewhere that it really smooths the notchy and grinding shifts out, but would like to hear from someone here who actually changed over to Redline in their tranny.

Mobil 1 75W-90 in both differentials as I don't tow anything. If you have a limited slip / TracLoc rear end you do not need to add any limited slip additives.

Use Mobil 1, it offers great protection, it is relatively cheap, and available at some Walmarts and just about all auto shops.

The WORST thing you can do is pay twice as much for a purple oil, then leave it in for longer than you should because you don't want to spend $80 to change it out.

Synthetic oil is better than mineral oil, but the advantage of one synthetic over the other in the conditions that WILL BE SEEN IN YOUR JEEP are probably not so great to justify the price difference of "gimmick" oils. I can see paying a bit more for Amsoil if it is easily available.

I guess my main thing would be that I find Royal Purple absurd. I know that it has its strong supporters, but the fact they needed to add a purple colorant to the oil to make it sell tells me everything I feel I need to know. Imagine that if instead of Jeep boasting its real off road ability, it relied on a 4wd lever that lighted up in flashing colors and beeped in a low robotic voice "Extreme mode activated!....Extreme mode activated!" when you put it into 4 high. Although, the 4 low mode that beeped "Ultra-extreme badass mode activated!....Ultra-extreme badass mode activated!!" would be pretty cool and funny.

I was never one to get caught up in this oil thing. It's always been, of my opinion any oil that meets the mfg. spec will do just fine. I'd rather put that extra money in mod's. After all everyone that sells oil tells you there oils the best.

X2 I have always been a fan of Castrol Dino juice. It has treated me just fine, I can get about 3500 miles on a change before my cluster yells at me when I startup. This usually only costs me 17.99 including the filter plus the extra quart at my local auto parts stores.
