Default Changing Pilot bearing

Has anyone changed their own pilot bearing/throw out bearing. in the 6spd.

Mine is super noisy. 4th 5th and 6th gear. cruising around 35-65 i get a noise in the tranz and when i push the clutch it stops. so i am guessing is the bearing. i went to the dealer and they are telling me it's my gears. but i explained to them that gear noise would not stop when you push down the clutch. they tell me im wrong. and i reply with this is why American cars are always at the bottom of the list because you guys are LAZY. my gears are fine. pattern is beautiful and they refused to fix it. I told them i know what im talking about and they said what do you know your not a mechanic and i said well Im ASC certified. then they shut up and rushed me out and said when i fixed the gears they would fix my transmission.

So my question has anyone changes this themselves. I have done is many times on a YJ wondering how hard it would be to do it on the JK

Any input would be appreciated

Thank you in advance

yup, pretty much a straight forward job for someone who has done it before even if it were on an older jeep. didn't change mine but had to do the motor and once apart I had a look the throw out bearing just clips on. can't remember if you would need a special puller to get the pilot bearing out though. hope this helps

an old trick for getting pilot bearing out of flywheel is to put grease in the center and fill it up. take a bolt that just fits in the hole and push or lightly tap the bolt. the pressure on the grease from the bolt will push the bearing out.

hope this helps.

yes this does work i have done it before. used a piece of smooth steel and mashed it with a mallet came right out. by buddy has a slide hammer for removing the pilot bearing on the yj not sure if it would fit on the jk though. don't know might try another dealer first before i do it myself just to save some time. but if they are going to have it for a month to do some stupid bearing i will do it myself in a day.

I went on mopar parts america saw all the parts i would need pretty cheap. I might just try this myself and do a write up on it with my friend. we could do it in a day as im sure jeep will have it for more than a week moving at their snail pace as usual .

I will keep everyone posted .

if it were the pilot bearing, it would only make noise with the clutch depressed. With the clutch out, the input shaft of the tranny is turning with the clutch and crank; no motion at the pilot bearing. Dealer's right for a change.

I thinks he's more worried about the trow out bearing, and while you're in there mite as well do the pilot to.

If it were the throwout bearing, I'd expect it to make noise with the clutch depressed, which is when it's loaded. Clutch out, the throwout should not be doing anything (unless it was installed wrong in the first place; I believe there have been a few of those). Same deal, though; the throwout only does something with the clutch depressed. Noise clutch out, transmission.

Yea when i push the clutch down the noise stops. so not sure what it could be but it's def in the tranny. don't know if it's the clutch plate or something anyone have any ideas on what else it might be?

i thought it was the throw out bearing but i may be wrong
