First few times I tried to check for codes it did not work until I figured out I was not keeping the key pushed in while turning it off to on and back to off. Keep light pressure on the key pushing it to the center of the steering column. If you are doing it right you really don't feel the intermediate ACC position. Once you start a 3 turn sequence don't pause at the on or off position and don't let the engine crank. Hope this answers what you were asking. Good luck.
