Default Check engine light. No code?

The dreaded light came on driving on the highway. No apparent problems with the vehicle. Day later it shut off for a few days and now it's back on.

Odometer method is reading no codes. Vehicle runs fine.

If the light came on there should be a code. Gonna need a scanner to read it.

Code readers are so inexpensive these days. Everyone that does their own maintenance should own one. Either a dedicated scanner, or an obd port thing like ELM and a cheap iPhone app. Total investment under $30.

True. However my next town over has ordinance that prevents them from touching your car other than wiper blade replacements.
