Default "Clanking"sound when in 4-Lo

OK, This is not my 1st 4x4 or my 1st Jeep by any means. I have this "clanking" sound only when the JK is in 4-Lo. It sounds like there is play in the drive shaft. Any thoughts as to what could cause this when only in Lo range?

Is it constant or only when you let off the gas?

Mostly when I let off the gas now that I think of it. Really similar to what you would expect from play in the driveshaft. Doesn't do it in 2WD or 4 Hi

I've noticed this as well. I only have 5,000 miles on mine so far and it's always made that noise (in 4-lo). I was kind of letting it go figuring I'm well under warranty and I'd wait for something to actually break. It does bug me though.

Me too. only 4-lo, only in a transition time like if i let off the gas or if i'm starting from a stop with my auto in 2, and it shifts from 1 to 2 sometimes i'll hear a clank. I've been wary enough of it that I go extra easy in 4-lo, specially when rock crawling.

And it's not a clanking sound so much as just a single clank.

What I don't get is why only in 4-Lo? It seems to me that if there is that much play in the drive line it would "clank" in 4-Hi also Rubidoo.....where are you?........(hee hee, couldn't resist).............I know you are a hard wheelin' girl......Same thing with yours?

Oh......by the way, I've got the 6-speed manny, not the auto

Mine does that too, if it's the noise I'm thinking about. I've only had it happen once when NOT in 4-lo but I can't remember the circumstances well enough to describe that instance.

For me it's in 4-lo, when I let off the gas quickly when the rig is under load - like when the tires break traction and I get off the gas to avoid breaking something.

Irony is that letting off the gas SOUNDS like something is breaking. First time it happened the TJ/YJ guys I was with freaked thinking something was broken. It was new enough that I hadn't made the 1st payment so I figured if it was going to break, under warranty would be the time to find out.

It's somewhat reassuring to know that I'm not the only one with the noise - so maybe it's 'normal'?

Normal slack in the system is correct. Especially noticeable in 4lo because it is amplified because of the extreme gear ratio.
