Default Cleaning and protecting

Hey guys. I have a stock 2010 2dr Jk just a light bar and some plastidip. I'm looking into cleaning my JK really good after this past NE winter. I want to start with the engine. I have some engine degreaser and protectant, what do I need to cover up? Bottle says spray everything and rinse after but I don't want to hurt my baby

Second, I want really get into cleaning the undercarrige which shouldn't be too bad. But then I want to wire brush some of the rust off (all mild, nothing severe) and put some black rustoleom on (mainly the skids, muffler, cross bar/frame.) is this good or has anyone done this? What can I NOT spray paint?

Any input on how you clean or protect from rust would be great!
Thanks!

For the engine bay, you should try to cover air cleaner, battery and alternator

For the undercarriage rust, you should wirebrush and use a primer before using the topcoat of black rustoleum. You can use the rustoleum rusty metal primer on the areas that you wirebrush.

Another thing you could do is to use wd40 on the rust before and after wirebrushing. This will help clean up the rust But, if you use wd40, you should use a cleaning paint prep product to clean the wd40 off before painting

As far as what not to paint: i usually stat away from exhaust since it will smell and burn off the paint anyway.

Thanks for the engine help. Is there any type of paint or protectant I can use on the muffler so it won't burn off?

Yes. Sand first. Wipe clean with rubbing alcohol or something similar. Then buy high heat spray paint that can withstand 500 degrees or higher. They sell it at autozone or homedepot. The muffler will actually bake the ceramic paint on.

Stop Rust with POR-15® - We Know What Permanent Means!

I agree with por 15. Stuff is awesome and take some abuse!
