Default Clutch or Slave Cylinder

Hello all, new member here. I have a questions concerning the clutch in my 2012 JK.

I purchased this Jeep in July and it currently has approx. 72,000 miles. While 72,000 miles seems like very low miles for my clutch to be going out i think it is.

I have a LOT of free play from the floor until the clutch starts to engage and when it is fully engaged it is only approx. 1/2 to 3/4" from the top of the stroke.

Could it be the slave cylinder or the clutch? Should I try bleeding the slave or should I just look at replacing the clutch? Is there a way to check the clutch disk to see if it is worn out of spec?

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Every clutch feels a little different, what your describing, if I’m reading correctly sounds about the same as mine. 101,500 miles still going strong.

If the through-out-bearing isn’t squealing, and the clutch isn’t slipping, you should be good to go. It’s a hydraulic clutch, it’s super light and equally as numb.

Also, when the slave goes bad you will know it, it will either start leaking, and or grinding gears with the clutch pedal fully depressed, or it just will stop working entirely. They don’t generally go bad in a slow fashion, they either just stop working completely, or they explode. When my last one went, the clutch slipped a little on the 3rd the 4th shift, and then when I went to shift to 5th, the clutch pedal went strait to the floor super soft, and I was stuck in 4th. I limped it Home to find the entire underside of the transmission covered in brake fluid, and when I tore it apart the slave was in three pieces.

If the slave was going out (e.g. losing fluid) there would be the opposite issue -- no (or little) free play between the floor and engagement.

Suggest finding another Jeep and compare the feel of the clutch. Jeep's clutch engagement seems a bit higher than my other vehicles too, but if the clutch doesn't slip at full throttle or chatter, it's likely OK.
