Are you going to take it off-road? What type of off-road travel? A lift and tires are the immediate answer, if so. But, if you're not going to off-road it, then maybe just stick with the stock wheels and tires. If you want a little more aggressive look cheap, check the for sale threads for some Rubi take-offs--slightly better looking wheel, and a tire that can get you by for off-roading. After that, the next thing is going to be front bumper. Then maybe also rock rails (if you wheel).

But, there are things you should be doing that aren't so visible if you intend to off-road. Oil pan protection. Relocate the steering stabilizer and evaporative canister (or add a skid for it). New tires probably mean reprogramming the computer so the speedo, et al, are correct (Rubi take-offs allow the dealer to set; anything much larger and you should budget money for a programmer).

So, back to my original question: Are looks more important, or is off-road performance figuring into the equation?

Just my opinion but I would personally start working on your armor first. Good starter would be either to get a skid for your evap, or relocate it.

the simplest mod you can do on your JK is turn the rear view mirror upside down.. it gives you more pace to see thru the windshield

For about $150 you can get the KC driving lights and install them on the hood. I get so many compliments on my JEEP since I put those on.
