Crush Cans
Multipart Question I got for the JK-Forum Crew. The crush cans behind the front bumper. The lil soda can looking buggers that stick out after the bumper is removed. I there their used for somethign with the airbag but idk. So here goes.
1. What are the purpose of the "crush cans" in the front bumper"
2. If they can be removed how would I do that.
3. By removing of the crush cans, what problems can you foresee for the JK

They are another crumple zone to absorb impact. I cut mine off. I cut it as short as i could with a sawzall, then with a grinder running a cutting wheel i cut the welds to the bumper. Then grind down clean.
cut mine off with a grinder that i bought for like 20 bucks at pep boys. very easy to do. there's just 3 weld points on each crush can i believe. once those are grinded down they just fall right off

As was posted, many have removed them with no ill effects. They do not contribute to the airbag deployment system, but rather just act as a crumple zone in a very very low speed impact, such as rearending someone, or running into the back of the garage, etc.
Easiest removal as posted with sawzell or grinder.
I can see no problems except perhaps a front low impact of the bumper might deploy the airbags a bit easier without them in place, but I doubt it.
