I can take my cap off and I do not get a gascap light indication!
Any suggestions?

The light doesn't come on right away. You have to drive around for a fair bit before it activates.

If you are doing this intentionally... may I ask why?

I have a 2009 Sahara, I pulled away from the Gas Station with the cap off.
When I got home, I said gee I did not see the indicator....lol

You won't get a light until the system pulls a vacuum test, at which point it will fail and the light will come on. If the computer sees you recently filled the tank, it will assume it's a loose gas cap and throw the code for that before it will throw a code for another reason.
If you haven't recently filled the tank, it will throw the code for a generic vacuum leak.
