Question does a fixed winshield look ok?

I have a rock chip in my winshield, and was planning to call tomorrow to get it "fixed" I've had some people tell me don't bother, the fix will look just as bad as the rock chip. I've had other people tell me that it's as good as new. One of the glass places I called even told me it's just for preventing the chip from cracking the window, but it will still be visible.

Have you had a chip "fixed" does it go away or does it look just as bad? I'm wondering if I shouldn't waste my money with a quick fix, and just get the whole thing replaced. This is still the OEM winshield, and a replacement would likely be a knockoff.

I didn't want to hijack the replacement thread, but it got me wondering.

The area that is fixed will likely be visible but not as much as before. Most insurance companies will pay for it without you having to pay a deductible. I've had many stone chips fixed and only notice them when I'm looking to see the area that was repaired. If your insurance picks up the tab you may as well have it repaired. If you are not happy with it then at least you aren't out any cash and can get it replaced. That being said, I believe after you see the repair you probably will not want to replace the windshield.

X2. depends on the nature of the chip and the craftsmanship of the individual doing the repair. Had 6 chips / bullseye's fix in my old Ridgeline. 4 disappeared and 2 remained somewhat visible, the two that were visible were the worst of the six. All were repaired by the same person.

Got one to be repaired in the new Jeep.

I had 2 bull eyes in my factory windshield "repaired" within months of each other almost 2 years ago. The first repair made the crack go away with just a small pinhole visible if you look close. The second is still visible but the crack never spread beyond the repair. Insurance paid for the first one and I paid for the second.

The second is on the passenger side and always catches my attention, but I can't justify replacing the windshield until I have more severe damage or cracking.

I've had rock chips fixed before and had to take a magnifying glass to see the repair. Also, most auto insurance companies cover windshield repairs 100% with zero deductible.

How long ago it happened doesn't matter. The big stopping point is size of the entire repair. If a quarter (I think) will cover it then it can be fixed. If it is bigger than a quarter they say it is beyond repair.

accoring to safelite if you can cover it with a dollar bill than its repairable.

but more importatly
get it fixed, even if it is still visible it will still be bonded to prevent expansion of the crack

I just fixed one tonight myself with a resin kit from pep boys for $9. looks good! fixing is great.
my last jeep KJ was prone to damage to the tune of 6 windshields in 6 years & 90k miles! and I fixed chips when I could but often times it cracked on impack in that thing & upright glass.

I'm hoping the JK is at least thicker. the chip I got was a major direct hit. months later & I finally got around to fixing it. from now on I'll fix it myself right away to prevent spreading!

If the chip is right in your line of sight when driving it might bug you to have a little blemish or blurry spot where the repair is, but if it's anywhere near the edge of the glass or way over on the passenger side, you'd probably never notice it again.
