Does this rear drive shaft need to be replaced?
I have a 2014 JKUR that is 51 miles away from 36k miles. I was under it today and I noticed this. There appears to be black stuff being thrown on the corner of the gas tank skid from where the rear drive shaft connects to the rear differential. When I touched it, it was more like soot than oil.
The Jeep does have a 3" lift and 35s. The dealership installed everything so they have been very good about warranty repairs so far (I have already had a new front drive shaft under warranty).
Is this drive shaft failing? If you need better pics just let me know.

I've never seen a pinion seal leak and not coat the area around the pinion, or the bottom of the axle itself. Gravity is going to win in that situation. I would wipe the soot off, and keep a close eye on it over the next couple of months.

Mine looks exactly the same as the OP's. Leaky pinion seal, going to fix it this week. It doesn't actively leak when sitting still or drain down the bottom of the diff. Instead it seems that it pools somewhere and then gets flung onto the gas tank when I drive.
