Default Engine Cooling Problem

Wondering if you guys could weigh in with me on this one..

2007 Jeep JK X/2dr 251,000km

I bought it with 242,000. Been replacing a lot of aging parts.

Clue #1 - 3 months ago I blew a radiator side of the highway in stop and go traffic after several minutes in Toronto in hot summer. A/C was running. This was after 3 hours of highway driving. Symptoms: Engine temp light came on/cluster chime. Engine temp gauge needle in the red. Not even 10 seconds, and radiator blew before I could pull over. Towed. Radiator had 1" hole blown. Tossed it up to it being original radiator. Replaced with a new one. Did not replace thermostat.

Clue #2 - Yesterday. 4 hours of highway driving completed at this point. -5°C. Heater was on low. Hit Brampton stop and go traffic. Engine temp light/cluster chime came on. Engine temp needle red. Managed to pull over immediately. Checked inside engine bay. Noticed radiator cap holding on like Hordor from Game of Thrones.

Didn't check radiator hose or heater hoses temperature by touch. Didn't think to. So not sure.

I am going to replace thermostat and likely water pump considering it's 251,000. I do get this harmonic whining noise I notice which leads suspect to water pump.

Just wondering if anything else like head gasket leak due to aforementioned symptoms.

Thank!

edit: It's the fan thermostat and the fan motor. For future searches.

I had a heating problem with my 2008 and also a check engine light. I don't remember the code but it indicated a plugged catalytic converter. Pulled the converters and they were both bad. No heating problems since.
