I dont wheel my Jeep like a lot of people on this forum do, but i do use it. My parents have a farm and it gets used as a tractor rather often. It has hauled hay wagons, played lumberjack by holding trees while topping and dropping. The rest of the machinery gets maintained regularly, as well as the Jeep. Overkill? Probably, but bulk oil in 55 gallon drums is reasonably inexpensive, and keeping a few filters on the shelf for a rainy day, then everything gets changed/lubed/etc. *shrugs* I have never lost an engine on that schedule, no reason to change it now.

i bought my oil and filter for my first oil change since owning my jk and bought 10-40 because that's what i've always ran in my vehicles in the summer time. i open the hood and commence to open the oil fill cap and notice the 5-20 wieght suggested on the oil cap. i went ahead and filled it with the oil and then went to the dealership to ask a few questions about recalls, front axle size(wasn't sure because of options-used jk) and if the oil i put in would be detrimental to the life of my engine. i'm 98% sure it'll be ok for this round of three thousand miles but the guys at the dealership couldn't/wouldn't give me a straight answer on my question- is it ok to run 10-40 for this three thousand miles. not to hi-jack the thread but am i clear to run out the next 2,700 miles and go back to 5-20 next?

The guys at your dealer won't give you a straight answer because it's a liability for them...IF I were you, I would drain and add 5w20. But that's just me. Go with what the manual recommends...you'll never go wrong.

10w40 shouldn't be a problem as long as where you are doesnt get very cold. The factory oil should give you more power and more mpg though- as its thinner.

Granted its a different vehicle but here in AZ, I use 15w50 in my Rover without any ill effects.

Ill also second Mobil One.

Ive used it in my 944, my Eclipse, and my GSXR... Its great oil for the price---well maybe not for the GSXR--$14 a quart is somewhat expensive and I should probably switch to REPSOL or AMSOIL.
