Engine Ping
I know what you're saying, I'm the same way. My wife stopped questioning me when I take apart our appliances. You learn a lot about something by taking it apart and seeing how it works. The first time I took the furnace apart, my wife thought I was nuts, and then said, well, it had better work when you put it back together. I've taken apart the fridge, the washer, the dryer, the furnace, well, everything. But when it does break, and all mechanical things do, at least I know what is supposed to happen, so I can see what's not happening and fix it myself. Household appliances are so much simpler than autos, and I'm sure, aircraft.
My 07 / 90,000 mile JK knocked for as long as I can remember. It'd usually do it up longer grades when I'd sharply get on the throttle - or when I'd grab a bad shift.
My JK has also burned about a quart of oil every 1500 miles.
I'm familiar with knock detection systems in GM vehicles; I have a few years experience tuning fully unlocked GM ECMs. I used to fight detonation literally all the time in a modified Silverado SS. I could easily feel the jeeps ECM/computer pulling timing to try to combat detonation. It (the jeep) would also do something with the throttle blade - my only guess is that'd it'd hang open to wussify the motor. I'd usually run higher grade gasoline if the knocking and knock-compensation would bother me enough.
I figured it was carbon from the burning oil gunking up my motor. I was wondering if I should start to seafoam the jeeps motor, look into a 'catch can' for the PCV system, clean out the throttle body, things like that.
I was due for plugs, so I threw some in two weekends ago. NGK GP / G-plus single platinums. I've been through three tanks of regular brand 87 grade gas (@ 10%eth). There is absolutely NO knocking or detonation now. It's GREAT. There is an undeniable difference in the way the jeeps motor behaves now. Its so much more responsive to throttle - the throttle blade doesnt hang open - there is a lot more natural engine braking (not the downshift variety). Its as if I performed all of the carbon-cleaning things I considered.
I'm a tough critic... really... but I'd definitely recommend trying some new plugs.

Mine has been pinging for about 20k miles, well that's when i noticed it. I have taken it to two different dealers and got two different responses, the first one says they don't know what I'm talking about they cant hear it bla bla bla, second one says "oh we hear it, but there's nothing we can do about it. Its normal and the 3 jeeps on the lot did it too. Try using high octane Chrysler recommends it anyways and that's what should be used". I told them it was unacceptable since the owners manual clearly states to use 87 octane and actually says they don't advise using higher cause its not designed for it. The dealer again says OH WELL, they cant do anything about it cause its all computer controlled......So in the end it seems the answer is deal with it cause that's what happens. More recently thou it actually was pinging with even 93 octane, so i guess its just what it is lol. I wish i could find a reason or a way to possibly adjusted the air/fuel settings, even thou the mechanic told me its not possible, unless you wrap the air filter in a thin t-shirt to possibly fool the computer. Until then i guess i just deal lol

Try putting in a new knock sensor...
Good thread to Read especially Post #41:

Well as like everyone else that bought a 2011 jk i too have the PINGS! It was pinging when i drove it off the lot with less than 1000 miles on it. My wife and i are very busy people and dont have very many opportunities to take it to the stealership. I finally was able to take it in at around 10xxx miles and of course they said we cant duplicate the problem and whatever your hearing is NORMAL AND PUT BETTER GAS IN IT. Then i took it back AGAIN and again they said the same... NORMAL PUT BETTER GAS IN IT! Then i took it to another stealership at about 20xxx miles on it and they said the same... NORMAL PUT BETTER GAS IN IT AND I NEEDED TO PUT D-13 INJECTOR CLEANER IN IT! Now i have 30xxx miles on it and took it to a different dealer and i took a tech for a ride and i POWER TORQUED IT AND IT PINGED LIKE CRAZY! The tech had no option but to say that it was DEFINATELY NOT A NORMAL NOICE SOMETHING WAS SERIOUSLY WRONG INTERNALLY! Then they called me the next day and said they pulled the heads and noticed that the carbon build up was so bad that the rings on the pistons were stuck so they pulled the pistons and cleaded up the carbon and put new rings on it and also put new plugs in it. I called the customer complaint line immediately and opened up a case because ill be damned if i am going to pay 700$ a month for a brand new vehicle with a re-build! I TOLD HER I WANT NOTHING LESS THAN A LIFETIME POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WITH AND FOR THE OTHER STEALERSHIPS SCREWING ME AROUND MAKE IT A BUMPER TO BUMPER! ITS SATURDAY NOW IM WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM HER ON MONDAY. ill keep everyone posted. SO DONT LET THEM TELL YOU ITS BAD GAS, IT MUST BE A FAILED GASKET WHICH MAKES IT BURN TOO MUCH OIL WHICH IN RETURN WILL PRODUCE SO MUCH CARBON WHERE IT WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE YOU GET A RE-BUILD AND WRONG GAPPING OF THE PLUGS! WTF IS UP WITH THE RECALL!!!!!!!!!!!! S O T A K E I T T O T H E S T E A L E R S H I P A N D T E L L T H E M T O F I X I T N O W B I - A T C H!!!!!!!!!!!!
Insight,
Bet you don't get what you are asking for. If you are lucky you will get a new engine.
I should post the "form" letter I got when I called. I was out of warranty so I just got a thanks for buying our product, better luck next time.
Just curious what oil and weight did you use?
