Engine sounds grainy or coarse when accelerating

Engine sounds grainy or coarse when accelerating
Hi, just wondering if the coarse grainy sound when accelerating and a kind of thumpy noise when going uphill on the freeway is normal for this engine. Seems to have plenty of pull, idles normal, quite smooth even, just the sound of the engine when rolling is unusual to me.
Had a 86 CJ Wrangler auto before.
