Engine warning light- EGR failing?

Engine warning light- EGR failing?
Recently my 2007 X's engine warning light came on. A check indicated EGR problems. Code was PO405, IIRC.
The light was on consistently for 3 days. Then for the last week, no light.
The engine is running fine and has been running fine.
Is it characteristic for the EGR "stuff" to fail slowly? Could something else have triggered the light/code?
