Evap issues
So I was getting this code.

Yes I tightened the gas cap three clicks. . I would use my superchips flashpaq to clear the code then it would come back. So I put a new gas cap on, two days later instead of a code it just said gas cap. So I tried tightening it again and it did nothing. I'm returning the gas cap tomorrow for a new one. But I was wondering if anybody else ran into this??

Been having fun with this also.
Started with 0440 after a squirrel got to the wires around the battery. Fixed all the wires and reset the check engine light. Every 60 miles it comes back on. Checked the wires, swapped the gas cap, unplugged and checked connections on the solenoid. Nothing.
Took it to the dealer, they spliced a wire that was missed, but said the solenoid checked fine. 60 miles later got both 0440 and 0441 (purge system performance). Back to the dealer, Purge solenoid and something? underneath the fusebox were replaced (no paperwork with me, don't remember what was under the fusebox). 60 miles later, just 0441. Reset the light and did nothing else, and the light stayed off for a few hundred miles. Then in the middle of a 17 hour drive to Texas, got 0443 Evap purge circuit A.
Hoping I can find someone in Texas who has a clue...

Well after talking to a couple shops they said to put a factory gas cap on and don't trust the aftermarket ones. Did that , no difference. Looks like I'm taking it in tomorrow.
Yeah... I went round and round with this too. Dealer did a smoke test for me ($95) and found that I had a leak right at where one of the lines goes into the evap. It LOOKED okay but was leaking enough to cause a problem.
Question: I have read repeatedly about smoke tests being done for evap issues, but how exactly does a smoke test work? Is this something I could do myself?

Can't do it yourself. They use a machine that pressurizes the evap system and inject smoke into the system. Then they literally look for smoke using a very bright flashlight.
I had same issue, has cap light always on, but I bashed the hell out of my Evap can, got a new one for like $130, no sense on paying for the smoke test, in my case anyway. Got a skid for it now.
