Default factory alarm won't work

Hi all. Just got my 2011 Sahara on Friday. Was trying to figure out everything this past weekend and I'm having trouble with the security alarm. I can't get it to go off. I lock it using the key fob with the door open, close the door, wait a minute, and when I go to open the door-NOTHING. It won't go off. I am going to go back to the dealer but thought I'd see if anyone here had any suggestions first. Thanks.

So let me get this straight, you're locking it with the fob with the door open, then unlocking the door from the inside shutting the door then opening it back? Or are you locking the door then shutting it then unlocking it and opening the door?

I don't think that the alarm will set if the doors are still open. Try locking it with the windows down, then unlocking it from the inside and then open the doors. That may solve your issue..

So I got the alarm to go off. BUT,and this may be a stupid question, what's the purpose of the alarm only going off if you open the door from the inside? Why doesn't it go off if you try to open the door from the outside?

If I open my door from the outside (using the key to unlock it) the alarm goes off.

Basically, if the door is opened without the alarm being turned off, whether you unlock it from the inside or with the key, the alarm will go off. So if someone decides to pick your locks and try and get in, when they opened the doors they get a nice surprise.
