Fair price for stock rubicon tires???

That sounds like a fair price assuming they are in good condition as you say. That's easily $900 and probably $1000 worth of tires when new. You have the advantage of knowing your buddy and what he did with the tires before you get them. Another person and I might say a bit less.

also anywhere in god's name to find a pair of used soft 8s. trying to make this very economical.

What I was saying is that they are probably correct Rubicon BFG MT KM's. They have that third style tread and not the original KM or KM2 if you were expecting either of those. Look for the "hook" in the center tread blocks.
