Default First Ice in the Jeep....Not Happy

So I don't think it was the Jeep's fault, but the tires. I have had 6 4wd vehicles in the past, so I think I know how to drive on slick roads. Tonight I took the Jeep out and it was a tad white knuckle where the wind had blown the snow across the road making a nice slick surface. She just slid over to the edge of the road over and over again lol. No real issues, I just had to creep along (passed by a civic at one point lol)

I am guessing its these Mud Terrains TA's? Just looking at them they don;t look like they would be worth a darn on smooth surfaces. I usually run Geolanders or Cooper Discoverers - but I love the look of agressive tread. I have seen good things about Duratracs - how about others? I dont want to put an SUV tire, but I don't want terrible winter performance either.

Thoughts?

mud tires are pretty sucky on glare ice. Even worse if you try to engage your lockers. Get your tires siped and they will grip better. Nothing beats a true snow tire imo for glare ice.

Studded would be best on ice.

not to mention the Jeep is not the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road. mine blows all over and it will never see ice over here in Hawaii. It's definitely not a car that's for sure.

Nope...not the Jeeps fault at all. In fact, the traction control system I find superior in the snow and ice. Simple problem is your MT's will not provide great compact snow/ice traction...some are better than others, but none will come close to AT's or winter dedicated tires unless you stud them.

We've had tons of snow/ice here the last few weeks and my totally stock 2010 Unlimited Sport has done fantastic on its stock tires. Can you just put the stock wheels/ tires back on for Winter?

For the area you live I would find someone selling some stock wheels and get a set of dedicated winter tires designed for snow and ice.

I had MT's on one of my TJ's and they were awful on ice.. I never knew about siping at the time.. I put the stock GS-A's (TJ's came with GS-A's) back on and they were much better on ice and light snow than the MT's.

Ditto on the stock ATs! We've already had a couple of snow storms and two ice storms this year and the stock tires combined with standard jeep awesomeness have been great. I've never had a vehicle perform so well in those conditions.
