flushing differential fluid
Ok so my jeep has been in the shop for the last week because my power steering pump went out... So the dealer fixed it today and as they are working on it the service guy calls me up and says '' jeep recommend that you flush your differential fluid every 12,000 miles'' I was wonding if anyone knows how true this is and how much you need to stay to the 12,000 miles?
Jeep wants to charge $260 to flush the differential for me and $145 to sell me the fluid to do it myself... is it cheaper to go else where to get the fluid or do you really need to use the jeep stuff?
Lance

DO IT YOURSELF! it'll run you maybe 30-40 bucks for the oil at your local auto parts store and only takes about 10 minutes. that is a HUGE ripoff. i believe that i used 75w90 mobil 1 in mine.
EDIT: here is the link to the write-up on changing your differential oil http://project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-...hange-write-up

Don't have the dealer do any of your preventive maint. They charge too much, and there is a good chance they will screw it up. Take the time to learn to do this stuff yourself and you save $$, and you will know exactly what was done.

Really? That's strange. Most vehicles runnin around on the road never even CHECK diff fluid, much less flush it out. Unless you're runnin a lot in water, piss on all that. I say check it and smell it at 50K and if you think it smells kinda burnt, change it then. 12K? That ridiculous. I don't give a damn WHAT Jeep recommends.

its an easy process... the rear 44 (if thats the one you have) holds approx. 2 bottles of gear oil... the front 30 about 1.5 bottles.
***while you are at it... you may as well pull the cover and hose them out with brake cleaner... scrape the remaining seal off the housing and cover and reseal with a high temp RTV and refill.
the top hole is the fill line... i assume you are running your stock diff covers.
***my diffs were leaky and that was the primary reason to reseal... although its probably a good idea as new gears will wear and leave fine metal particles.
