I fixed mine by developing the habit of looking as I begin to close the door.
Works every time.
If there is someone in the right seat, a casual "Watch the seat belt in the door latch" works too.

I always make sure the seat belt has rolled when I take it off before getting out

Mine does it too on a 2012. I had the same problem with one of my Subarus though. Not sure why- broke the plastic button on the belt that kept the plug-in latch part from moving down to the bottom of the door. I kept replacing the button but finally after breaking four times I had to put in a wire brass brad to keep it from falling all the way down.

This is the only fix. Just can't unhook and jump out.

I would think you could take it apart and roll it up tighter. Like a tape measure.
