Default Has anyone taken apart their driver or passenger door?

My passenger door lock wants to lock with the fob, but doesn't. It appears something might be loose or gummed up. The electrical works, power windows work, lights on when opened, etc.

I noticed the area toward the back of the inside handle opener/lock looks like its loose and about ready to pop out.

Has anyone ever disassembled the door panel? Is it a mess? Best to avoid and take it to the dealership? I am past my regular warranty.

There is a thread or two somewhere on the forum with images of inside the door and discussions. I think they involved installing power windows or something. I'll poke around and post if I find one.

You can always pull the inside trim panel and peek around. If the handle feel loose it could be something accessible from there.

EDIT: here is a link to a write up for adding power door actuators, at least there are some photos.

Thanks... I poked around today before finding your reply, after reading all that, they too had some difficulty. I think it might be a bad motor. I'll call my dealership and see what they want to charge me. Then see if it's important enough to fix right now.

The power lock actuator is integrated with the the lock mechanism that is behind the outside handle. There are a couple complex control rods that run from the rear of the door to the inside handle and manual lock button. The thread that Jiblet pointed to does have some good pictures of what the look like. You do have to pull out the power window motor assembly to get to the lock mechanism. If there is any luck it could just be the inner handle has become loose and is causing the bind. If it is the lock mechanism that is out to lunch I think they run about $75 for the power version. If you get in a bind I do have a set of manual ones that came out of my half doors that you'd be welcome to if you want them to get you by until you get the replacement power one. PM if you are interested.

It does still lock manually, lol. But the wife forgets when she gets out. However the other day I couldn't even get the key to unlock it... so something might be loose. The passenger window button LED isn't lit either, yet the window does roll down. It's weird.

I have been having some really bad luck lately with my Jeep, it's like it knew when my warranty ran out. I started to explore, but I felt I would do more harm than good, so I stopped. I will call and see if I'm still covered with an extended warranty, can't remember if I did that, so it would be just the $100 bucks deductible. Or if we ever see each other again at a Teraflex Meet n Greet before that, maybe you can help me out by looking at it.
