Help! 4WD Shift Knob Removal 2010 JK
This knob is definitely designed and placed by Satan. The Dark Lord. Beelzebub. The Old Gentleman. You get my drift. After looking for various answers on the Forum (unfortunately not yours), I tried cushioning the dang thing with a thick cloth, grabbing it with a vice grip, and tapping with a hammer to extract the knob. BIG MISTAKE. The shifter snapped right off at its base. Now I can only drive in 4WD LOW - to the repair shop. I sure wish I had seen your advice!
Well, I know the original querie was regarding a 2010 shift knob removal - and I can only comment on the removal of 2016 shift knobs - which is really easy with the correct tool.
The trick is to use a strap wrench - move the knob about a 1/4" to the left, then turn the wrench around and move the knob 1/4" to the right and the knob will come off easy.
When you replace the knob, there will be a little slop in the fit - that's just a good reason to purchase a cool custom knob from Speed Dawg !

Their shifters are well made and fit perfect.
My 2 cents ....
