Stock JK TechBulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.
I've run into an issue removing the middle tie down torx screw on the passenger side of my JKU cargo compartment. This is screw farthest from the tailget that secures the interior fender trim panel to the bed of the JKU. The screw is just turning freely without backing out or setting in deeper. It is currently about a quarter of an inch from being fully seated. I can get underneath the plastic side panel and cut the screw, which would free the plastic trim panel, but I'm not sure how I would be able to get the remainder of the screw out of the insert, or permanently repair. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Driver side example What is this called? I believe this insert is spinning freely on the passenger side which is preventing the screw from being removed.
Its a swaged nut with a flanged head. The nut is forced into the body hole and is suppose to be a tight fit. But as you've said the flanged nut is simply spinning around. You're going to have to be a bit creative to extract this. Possibly drill this out completely, then set in a new type nut and bolt system. Not sure you can press in a new nut, so you may have to get creative. Possibly weld a new nut in place.

This is an instance where having the ability to weld is the difference between a 30-sec fix or a headache. Welding sure opens up an entire new world of problem solving.
I can't recall the exact size/thread pitch on those bolts off the top of my head, but I'd imagine you could find a corresponding nutsert to stick in there if you can get the old nut out. You can install a nutsert with simple screw, 2 bolts, and spacer cobbled together as a "tool" along with a couple wrenches. It's not as easy as having the proper tool but it's doable, especially for only needing to do 1.
**just noticed you're in Jamaica. Probably doesn't help any in sourcing something like a simple nutsert off ebay.
