Default High pitched whine?

I know, this will likely take me back to the dealer, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this.

My 08 has this relatively low volume, mechanical whine, high pitched, coming from the driver's side, inside the engine compartment but low and by the firewall (roughly.) At times, when driving, it almost sounds like a whistle.
It's generally there when in motion but I'm off the gas. Press the gas, and it goes away. Depress the clutch, and it disappears. It's usually gone if I'm parked, idling, in neutral, but every now and then it's there, which is how I somewhat located it.

It could have been there before, but I usually drive with the stereo on. Yesterday I had to get my 2 YO daughter, which meant not blasting the system.

Any ideas?
