Hill/slight incline highway problems
So I'm sure you're all having the same problem as me, my jeep is a hog. A slow, fat, gas drinking hog. And I'm ok with that, it's a jeep, i bought it for it for what it does off road not for the MPG. However, I'm not ok with having to choose between downshifting up hills or riding it out in 4th od at 45-50 MPH (speed limit is 70 in MI). I'm running stock 17's with stock size KM's and 3.73's. Have any of you found anything that works on hills? slight little or big things you did to gain a little (much) needed power in our rear wheel drive mini vans? Or am I just another dreaming down shifter

What motor?
I'm running General Grabber AT 2's (32") on my 13 JK 3.6. With 3:21 gears.
5th is no problem, 6th is the problem. Most of my driving Is hwy, and off road consists mostly of beach access for fishing.
You should be fine with 3:73. I'm Regearing to 3:73 because I don't plan on going bigger than 32's and the 3:21's are killing me on the hills around here.

You've got about 50 more HP than I do, and I'm on a 4 speed auto. Re gearing is not an option. Don't need anything more than what I've got, just wanted to see if there was anything else to do. But like I said, all input is appreciated so thanks!

You can get 28 inch tires....
Downshifting is totally normal, bogging down your engine at low rpm uses more gas than downshifting. 4500 lb brick and 200 hp, and high spped creats a lot of drag. I don't understand your adversion to downshifting. Downshift raises rpm, engine has more hp at higher rpm, you can then overcome wind resistance and gravity. Push down on the skinny pedal hard. It should jump to 3d or 2d on its own.

In my 08, I used to press the "tow" button to engage tow mode when I knew a highway hill was coming. I believe it basically turns off OD so you're running only as high as 3rd gear. I'd press the button again after the hill to turn it off... maybe that will help?

On my 11' JKUR I added an exhaust and an K&N intake and it did help, also of course turn OD off and keep it in 3rd up long hills. When me and my wife and our 3 dogs and some small amount of stuff are in the Jeep it'll still sometimes have to go down to 2nd on long steep uphills like the 5 north out of L.A.; screaming at 4500 rpm or so and going 45 mph or whatever; the 3.8 really is a joke.
