Default How Important Is This Part?

My Jk Rubi Unlmt. just got back from the dealer after getting a new front right shaft. Last night I got the chance to really look at the work and noticed that the plastic dust slinger/cap thingy that is just outside the axle sleeve and is on the shaft is missing. This is the part that's supposed to keep debris from getting inside the axle. The one on the left side has a pretty good sized space between itself and the axle tube. My question is do I really need this thing or is it basically worthless since they have gaps anyway? Anybody taken them off and left 'em off with no regrets? Thanks in advance!

I had the same issue on the other side and my dealer told me today that they are not supposed to be installed with the replacement shaft. I have no idea why but they warranty the shafts ans seal forever so I don't really care.

Some one really needs to explain to me why you would ever install these in your Jeep? I must be an idiot because I just don't get why people are replacing seals, drive shafts, axle shafts and any other part that is backed by a lifetime warranty.

yeah maybe you are.....maybe people are putting BETTER parts on so they dont have to keep going back to the dealer when parts fail to TRY to get them to cover jeeps that have been modded, not all of us are lucky enough to have good dealers that will cover suspension and driveline parts after their jeeps are lifted and running 35 and up size tires, some of us dont want to be out on the trail waiting for some of the stock crap to break when we can replace it with superior parts....most of us dont have time to fight with dealers or go on to the next one to try and see if the next will cover it.

Well then...I stand corrected. I didn't realize that everyone didn't have the warranty. As for the fight or searching for a dealer I've never experienced that problem. I had a good friend of mine that had issues with his dealer simply ask if he could have the written documentation from Chrysler stating that lifting you Jeep or installing larger tires voids your warranty and they couldn't produce it. Mopar offers a vast assortment of parts to modify your JK all backed by the factory warranty so how can Jeep say If you put an aftermarket lift in it will void your warranty but if you put in the Mopar one (made by RE) it doesn't?

yeah hold onto yours and pray they dont get closed and pray that the Obama keeps paying them for warranty work or I bet they will stop covering also. As far as the RE lift they sell there is NO document that says its covered 100% again it depends on the dealer, there was someone one here that got a steal of a deal on the mopar RE lift from ebay for I think 2500 and almost sold it because he couldnt find a dealer to install it AND still warranty the jeep. Yes its bullsh*t and the dealers sucks but how much time you got to fight with them? I sure as hell dont. I know there are dealers out there that are cool about it lets just hope it stays that way.

Why should Chrysler warranty an axle shaft if you are running 35's that weigh nearly double what a factory tire weighs? Why should they warranty a drive shaft if you are running it at the wrong pinion angle after lifting? Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why people buy a Jeep, mod the hell out of it, and then still have the expectation that Chrysler will warranty problems that are clearly caused by the mods.

And soon thanks to bankruptcy they'll be even fewer and even farther between.

Agreed. I'm a tech for GM and if something is heavily modified, I just can't warranty it. My boss will scream and ultimately, if GM screams, we don't get paid for the repair and have to eat it which becomes a very expensive mistake. On the tech side of it, you get paid next to nothing for warranty work and about double for customer pay work, so guess which one most techs will favor. I do everything I can to get it covered because it makes the customer happy and then we've just solidified another customer. If you get a dealer to warranty something for you on a lifted vehicle, buy the tech and the advisor a 6 pack to let them know you appreciate it and they will keep doing their best everytime for you
