Default I may have termites in my hard top.

I laid a board across a couple of metal sawhorses to make a shelf to store it on this past summer. Today, when I was changing tops, there were termite tunnels on the exterior of the board. There was also termite dust up the outside of one of the windows and across the rubber seal. I'm hoping they aren't in the seal.

Great now I have to consider getting the Orkin man to come out and treat my hardtop for termites? As funny as that sounds I truly hope that is not the case for you. Would termite damage be considered an act of god and NOT qualified under warranty?

Don't think termites eat fiberglass. But I could be wrong.

I doubt you have termites- there would NEVER be any ''barn find'' antique Corvettes.....

I have had termites in concrete before......so firberglass isnt such a long shot......as per the "barn find corvets" couldnt that also have a lot to do with abient weather..i.e. cooler and how the glass was sealed? Termites go dormant in cold weather and most of the "barn finds" i hear about are in the north-east????

I know I had hornets or bees bore into the outside of my brick home right into the concrete. I would suspect bees more than termites looking for a place to build a nest if they made a hole in your top. If they make honey you could put a spigot in the hole and have great biscuit and pancake mod for camping But if the holes are only in the board and are small, termites may have been in the wood already when you set it up and were looking for some more wood when they came out.

Carpenter Bee's are nasty buggers and will drill into wood and other softer substances to make homes but thier holes are fairly large diameter and there would be little question if it were them.

As far as termites, I don't know. I suppose it is possible. Do you have pictures of the holes?

Termites can't live without access to dirt. If this board was a couple feet in the air, how were the termites accessing dirt? They've been known to build a tunnel/column up to an area they have infested. Did you see such a column? If not, I don't think you have termites.

As for what termites will bore through: They bored right through the sheetrock on my home (when this happens in your home, you start learning a lot about termites!). They can't live on that, but they were obviously interested in the wood studs underneath. Unless the hardtop has some type of wood frame in it (?), I doubt they'd bore into your hardtop--they need the cellulose in the wood to live, too.

You'd definitely see the tell tale termite mud tunnels if it were them. They need it moist.
