I can't believe nobody mentioned tire pressure. Allways maintain your tire pressure and even put it up 5-10 psi over what's recomended on the door card.
Changing to a tire with less rolling resistance and less weight will also help reduce the amount of work the motor has to do.
Good synthetic oils in motor, gearbox and diffs will cut down on friction.
Get extra weight out of the jeep. Already mentioned the wheels/tires, look for other easy things you don't need. A can of tire sealant and a small compressor is lighter than a full size spare. The stock battery is massive and heavy. Stock muffler is just fat and ugly. Do you use your back seat regularly?
Put all that in a box and see how much energy it takes you to move it.

Some good tips were provided, but in my experience the MPG is still going to really suck regardless of anything you might do... SO:
Try not to dwell on it, and enjoy your Jeep!

16-22mpg
I am actually running 33's with a direct air intake and a Superchips paq (only cause i wanted to recalculate for the tires) and i get 16-17 in town and 18-22hwy, the key for me has been to run a little higher tire pressure, 40lbs and it still runs smooth.

I agree with everyone here...speed seems to key. If I roll at 60-65 on the hwy, I do ok. However, 70 and the needle drops fast! I can say that when I put on my snorkel, I noticed a measurable increase in MPG's, but really only at hwy speeds. My typical daily grind through bad traffic sees nominal gains at best! My thinking is that the draw from the snorkely while idling in traffic is slightly harder on the engine. However, at hwy speeds, I have averaged, yes, averaged, 22-23 mpg on some longer trips...again all at the sub 65 mph as I mentioned, but this is substantial...used to get 20'ish when doing same thing. I also notice a drop off in mpg with the soft top...I think the aerodynamics suck even more with that! Just my two pennies....enjoy the JK and be glad you're not in a Prius!

Premium on the pump means higher octane, which will not get you better mpg's. Higher octane additives may actually decrease mileage, (on a vehicle rated for lower octane fuel), since the additives decrease the energy density of the fuel.
