Installing an aftermarket Stereo
So, when I bought my '08 JK I got it with the base radio, planning to install an aftermarket radio with XM Satellite and iPod interfaces. I've been an XM subscriber for years, so I really didnt' want to have to sign up with Sirius.
Here are the steps I took to install a Pioneer DEH-5900IB stereo and GEX-920XM sat radio interface.
step one: Consult JK-Forum on Dash-board dis-assembly, remove factory radio, discover CANBUS network
step two: Go to local stereo store to find an interface between aftermarket stereo and CanBus network. they have one, but it costs almost as much as the stereo. buy it anyway
step three: Try to stuff stereo, Can-Bus network interface, and ipod interface into dash. It all fits, eventually
step four: Find a place to mount the XM interface. Rear storage compartment looks good.
step five: run cable to XM interface. Discover that carpets and plastic molding in a Jeep are very easily removed. Have a Guinness in celebration
step six: Hook everything up. Wonder why there is no audio from xm interface.
step seven: Drink a Guinness while contemplating lack of XM Audio
Step eight: move Pioneer proprietary network cable from "in" to "out" on xm interface, get audio.
step nine: Drink a guinness in celebration
step 10: remove stereo from dash to get xm ID number so the $%$%@#$ thing can be registered with XM.
step 11: put stereo back in dash, listen to XM Led Zeppelin channel, drink a Guinness in celebration
No pictures, battery in the camera was dead.
