Jeep stalled today - fuel problem
08 Unlimited X - 5,500 miles.
I pulled my Jeep out of the garage this morning (it was backed in) and left it running in the driveway (My driveway is approx 10 degree angle going down to the street, nothing too steep). I went in to get the dog, and when I came back out the Jeep was sputtering and then cut off. My first guess was that it ran out of fuel, but I knew it was a little above 1/4 tank before I put it in the garage last night.
I got in the Jeep and the fuel gauge was below E. The Jeep would not start. I knew there was fuel in the tank so I let it roll down the driveway to the flat street, and it started right up. I got to the front of my neighborhood and the gauge was still below E. I put it in park and turned it off, restarted and the gauge was a little above 1/4 tank. I checked my miles to empty and it was at 91.
I'm not one to let me fuel get too low, I usually fill up at 1/2 tank. But was concerned that my gauge was a little above 1/4, but when park backwards in the driveway on a slant it would not run or seemed to have fuel delivery problems. I would have expected this if I was really low on fuel. This could certainly be a problem if you were off road.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. It is going in Friday for it's first oil change anyway, so I will mention it to them and see what they have to say.

i have the same problem, the the fuel light going on and then off as I get on level ground. Its not very accurate at all. I remember on my old 97 grand cherokee there was a recall on the fuel gauge because it was not accurate.,
i have an incline for a drive way. i have noticed that when i park at night with 1/4 tank, when i start up in the morning it is EMPTY. i have started it and had it die and had to let it roll down to level ground to start back up. i too reverse into the parking place.
the guage always reads lower after sitting. i know that its due to the incline and parking in reverse, because it its like clockwork.
let us know what the dealer says.

More prevalent in the 4dr, but the tank has some length to it. If the Jeep is parked an angle, all the fuel will be at the lower end. I'm not sure where the fuel pickup is, but I would assume near the center of the tank.
The fuel pick-up on the unlimited is near the rear of the oblong tank. This permits getting fuel while going up a steep grade but the potential of fuel starvation with low quantity and going down a steep grade where at least gravity is in your favor. Best not to run to low on fuel when wheeling in steep graded areas.

I learned that the hard way.my first off rd trip.it was suppose to be a quick in n out.i had just under hAlf a tank.i wend down a steep grade n got stuck on a tree trunk n front bumper.it was already dark out.as I was working the jeep back n forth trying to get out the jeep stalled n wouldnt start.well to make a long story short.i had to add gas n I didn't extra with me.so u can imagine what we had to go thru including having to cross a high stream river in the dark.hahanever again

This is an old thread but it is one of the few discussions of this I have found. I was high sided facing down hill, the slope was fairly steep and I had less than half a tank but certainly well over a quarter. The Jeep stalled, fortunately a CJ a couple rigs back had a decent winch and was able to pull me sideways off the ledge I was on, and I was able to coast to flatter ground. The thing started right up. I guess I'd rather have it run out facing down hill rather than up but other than making sure the tank is TOTALLY full as much as humanly possible is there a fix to this?
Had this exact same thing happen to me when high sided and facing downhill. Today I went wheeling, 3/4 tank full and was having issues climbing up a steep grade. Couldn't hold rpm's steady and frequently stalled. I have an 07 JK, manual tranny, 35" tires
