Jeep throttle sticking on high idle.
So this has happened on a few occasions already... I'll go to step on the accelerator while driving to speed up and then when I let go it feels like someone is still stepping on the accelerator and the jeep will keep moving along at the same speed I accelerated to instead of slowing down. Sometimes when I start the jeep, it will start off with a really high idle. One time the jeep started revving really high, so I stopped and put it in park, but the jeep just kept revving itself all the way up to 4000 rpms!! To me this is a safety issue that I would like to get fixed sooner rather than later. Was wondering if anyone has experienced this or if you have any suggestions? Thanks.
I had a mechanic take a quick look at the jeep (he didn't have time to do a proper thorough inspection though) and he said it felt like the pedal had some resistance to it, like it was a little stiff or something. The thing is it doesn't go into high idle all the time, only once it a while it will act up. For the past while it has been fine, then it will start revving itself randomly. Today when it was doing this to me and revving while parked, I tried lifting up on the pedal with my foot and it brought the idle back down.

Could be the carpet/mat, or a binding pedal assembly.
I checked the carpet and the mat and they are okay and not obstructing anything. I did get some sort of code pop up for the cruise control system. It showed up on my code reader. I went out just now to get the code again to write down the number, but now the code is gone even though I never did actually clear it. I have read that on some vehicles the cruise control cable can get stuck and hold the throttle open causing a high idle, but I don't know if this would or could be the case with the jeep. Another guy suggested my throttle position sensor may be the causing this or even a vacuum leak.

Ok that's good to know. I don't even use cruise control anyway, lol. At least now I have some ideas I can take to the shop with me. Thank you for the very helpful advice!
