JK Soft Top Strap Replacement
On my son's 08 JK, the soft top straps were torn loose. One was completely gone, the other had ripped from the mid top bow. The top really sagged and had severe leak in back. Disappointed with the cost of replacement straps we came up with our own fix. I imagine it was about as time consuming as other fixes I've seen.
The remaining strap measured about 37". To be safe, I ordered 2, 2" wide, 4' long black nylon straps from strapeworks.com. After removing the top and laying it out we removed all of the rivets, 3 on each side of rear bow and 2 each on mid bow. Then drilled through the rivet holes and through the far side of bow with a 9/64 bit. Of course the holes needed a little clean up with Dremel grinder bit.
The mid bow had 2 rivets each side while the rear had three each side. With a 2" strap I could only use two holes in rear. The original strap had been attached to the bows on only one side of the bow. Drilling all the way through the bows each strap would now be wrapped around the bow and anchored on both sides, hopefully spreading the stress.
We cut the straps to 40" to allow for them to be wrapped all the way around each bow. Clamping the strap to the bow, I heated a small diameter punch then burned through the strap, through the two holes in bow and out the other side. Hope fully this will keep the strap from fraying at anchor points like OEM did.
I then used #6 machine screws with washer on either side and small lock washer under the nut. Used 1 1/4" screws on mid bow and 1 1/2" screws on rear bow. (Rear bow bar is a bit larger than mid bow.)
We lucked out and it is almost as tight as a new top. We ran out of day light so tomorrow we will check the screw heads and the (minimal) exposed threads out of the nut to see if they might rub on any fabric. If so, I have some scrap pipe insulation we can wrap around the bow and screw ends
