I'm in the middle of vacation right now with two kayaks on the roof with no rack. Over a 1000 miles so far with having crossed the Mackinaw bridge with high winds and exploring lots of trails in Michigan's U.P. I have two 2*4s with carpet that lay on the roof. They have eye bolts and rope to keep the kayaks from shifting sideways. I have ropes in the front and back . Been great so far.

Thanks for your input. However I'm looking for how to do it with no top or the soft top on since that's what I'm running right now. I do like the hard top way will use that in the future.

For no top.. Google Kayak Foam Blocks.. Pop a hole through them, insert a PVC pipe that you can run a rope through and tie them to the roll bars..

I have 13 ft kayak that I run-on my soft top all the time. I have some of those cheap form noodles for the pool and cut them down and put them across bumps in the soft top so the kayaks isn't directly on the fabric and tie it down to the bumper and front hood. But I'm only about 5miles from the water and speeds no more than 45 mph

There's a rack that goes into your trailer hitch (if you have one) it supports the weight of most of the kayak and the rest lays on the roof. Should be no problem for soft top.

I work at an outdoor retailer' Thule dealer. First question I ask is "how far, and how fast will you be going?" With no top, you should be fine on the sport bars. With the soft top much of the weight is on the windshield frame and softtop bows. Imo that's not a good idea. As mentioned, if you have a hitch and can support the kayak with a hitch mounted device, it should work. Also there is an external frame that installs outside of the soft top. That would be best but big $$$$.
