Default Kayak solution for a 2rd hardtop???

Ive been looking all over and can't seem to find a decent solution. I do not want a full rack or anything too large. I have been thinking about maybe using a field goal post style rack off the receiver, and either using foam blocks in the front, or maybe a Thule gutter mount rack for the front. I could probably engineer it to were a majority of the kayak's weight is on the rear part of the system, but i'm still apprehinsive about using the gutter mounts. Another problem is my kayak is only 9' (i actually don't even have my yak yet, waiting on a solution for carrying it before i get it) but it is/will be an Ocean Kayak Frenzy. I don't plan on ever driving more than 60-65mph with the kayak on. If possible, could i just use the field goal post bar, foam block, and tie the front down into the tow hooks/front bumper. Someone needs to get us a fix for these things!

Last year when I got my four door, I had a friend weld up a T-bar that went into the rear receiver and in the front I just used foam blocks, it worked well enough and this year I'm planning on ordering a Kargo Masters Congo Cage, but I was also thinking about a Warrior Products Safari Rack Light bar for the front to act as a support.

Several times last year, I just tied my 2 14' kayaks to the roll bars and went like that.

If it's warm enough to go kayaking, it's warm enough to take the top off!!! Just strap it to the sport bars, or get something like this:

Or something like this:

Other than that, Thule and Yakima seem like rather responsible companies. If they market rack systems for the hard top, I'm sure you won't have to worry about anything flying off!

The track rack systems will work on your hard top rear section. Thule or Yakima. you can take off the cross bars when not in use.

Non-Jeep question: What are you using the kayak for? The Frenzy is a very very short boat.

flowing rivers and playing in the surf. No long haul stuff. I'd prefer something a tiny bit shorter actually, but with me at 210 lbs or so, the frenzy will work better than other options.

i'm looking for options with the hardtop on, because i will be taking the yak from houston to galveston, port aransas, and austin areas. I don't want to have to have the top off all weekend while i'm there.

Default I am looking too for a kayak solution

I have been talking to several dealers. On the forums, I've read about putting tracks on. Many also have chose the Thule gutter mount. The dealers I've talked to don't like the gutter mount on the fiberglass gutter, though folks on the forums report no problems.

Some dealers are suggesting the Yakima Landing Pad 6. This would also allow you to remove the rack when not in use, leaving just a little mount base on the roof. I am still undecided myself.

I have a 10 ft. Surf-Jet, and several 15ft Ocean Kayak Scupper Pros, and one Ocean Kayak Cabo at 17.6 ft. (I usually use my trailer I built to hold 4 kayaks if traveling, but for just running to the beach, I can't always park the trailer there.)

Let us know what method you choose....I seem to be stalled on this decision

i think for my purposes, i'm just going to use a T-Bar in the rear from the receiver, and i might weld on a extension to it, so instead of just having the cross bar, i'll have a small square (maybe i can rig this to be a small rack as well) and rig the yak to have a majority of its weight on the t-bar. then in the front i think i'll just use foam blocks, and fasten it tightly to the jeep in the front. I think this would work just fine for my uses until a better option comes available.

The only reason I ask is the Frenzy is a very wet boat. And if you want to play in the surf (surf waves with the yak) None of the Ocean Kayak brands track well in the surf or in fast moving water. I sold my Ocean Kayak. I now have a few Cobra Kayaks. If you want a real fun boat in the surf. Look at the Cobra Strike or Wave Witch. If your looking for a dry ride. their touring boats are great. The Navigator and Fish&Dive boats are very nice. They are stable and track well in rough water. They have smaller models as well. both of those boats are 12 feet. They go down to 10 feet for touring boats

Driveoverstuff - I'm going to use the same thing - the hitch extender in the rear and the foam blocks in the front. I wonder if you could drill into the hitch extender(t-bar) and put some hook eyes? Keep us posted.

well, the cobra strike is rated at 230 lbs. So if i bring any gear i'm over the limit. I've ridden the Frenzy and it played well in the surf. Its also 4" wider than the strike, which will help with stability in the surf, especially with my size not to mention it is much cheaper. I also felt it tracked adequately for what it is. If i wanted to stay dry, i wouldn't be looking at sit-on-top kayaks = ] .
